EHS Specialist II

Nikkiso Applied Technologies is a leading manufacturer of heat exchangers, liquefiers, and vaporizers for the LNG and industrial gases industry. Applications include fueling stations, marine engines, peak shaving, power generation, virtual pipelines, and well stimulation.

The EHS Specialist II supports the implementation, administration, and continuous improvement of environmental, health, and safety (EHS) programs to ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and company requirements. This position partners with operations, engineering, quality, facilities, and management to identify hazards, reduce risk, prevent injuries, ensure environmental compliance, and promote a proactive safety culture. The role serves as a technical resource and subject matter expert in occupational safety, health, environmental compliance, and risk management initiatives.

Rate

$31/hr-$42/hr

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

1. Support and maintain company EHS management systems and continuous improvement initiatives.
2. Assist with the development, implementation, monitoring, and improvement of EHS objectives, targets, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
3. Participate in and support corporate and site EHS audits, assessments, inspections, and management reviews.
4. Support compliance with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 management system requirements, where applicable.
5. Conduct Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and risk assessments for manufacturing processes, equipment, and new equipment installations.
6. Support risk-reduction activities using hierarchy of controls principles.
7. Assist with evaluating machine guarding, ergonomic risks, and workplace hazards and recommend appropriate engineering and administrative controls.
8. Assist departments with the development and implementation of corrective and preventive actions resulting from audits, inspections, incidents, and near-miss events. Track actions through completion and assist with verifying effectiveness.
9. Support and monitor compliance with applicable OSHA, Cal/OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other federal, state, and local EHS regulations.
10. Assist with maintaining applicable regulatory permits, inspection records, compliance documentation, and required environmental reports, including hazardous waste, air quality, stormwater, chemical inventory, and other regulatory reporting requirements.
11. Conduct periodic compliance audits and inspections to verify regulatory adherence.
12. Assist with evaluating employee exposure to occupational health hazards, including noise, welding fumes, silica, chemicals, heat stress, and airborne contaminants.
13. Coordinate and support industrial hygiene monitoring activities and assist with recommendations for corrective actions based on exposure assessment results.
14. Support occupational health programs, including hearing conservation, respiratory protection, and medical surveillance.
15. Support and facilitate investigations involving incidents, injuries, property damage, environmental releases, and near-miss events using appropriate Root Cause Analysis methodologies, such as 5-Whys, Fishbone Diagrams, or similar techniques.
16. Assist with analyzing incident trends, tracking corrective actions through completion, and developing recommendations to reduce the potential for recurrence.
17. Support hazardous waste management, storage, handling, and disposal activities in accordance with applicable requirements.
18. Assist with maintaining Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and chemical inventory systems.
19. Support spill prevention, stormwater compliance, wastewater management, environmental permitting, reporting, and environmental emergency response activities.

22. Support and conduct periodic safety meetings, toolbox talks, and EHS awareness campaigns.
23. Assist with facilitating safety committee meetings and employee participation in EHS improvement initiatives, including communicating findings, recommendations, and action items to leadership.
24. Participate in and support emergency response planning and business continuity initiatives, including evacuation drills, emergency exercises, and related training.
25. Assist with coordination and communication with local emergency responders, medical providers, and regulatory agencies, as necessary.
26. Support the administration of contractor and visitor safety programs, including verifying contractor compliance with company safety requirements and conducting field observations and audits.
27. Provide EHS-related coaching, guidance, and support to supervisors and employees regarding company safety procedures and applicable EHS requirements.
28. Support employee involvement in EHS initiatives, including behavioral safety, safety observations, hazard identification, and continuous improvement programs.
29. Assist leadership with identifying opportunities and developing strategies to improve EHS performance, compliance, and key performance metrics.
30. Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

This job is operated in a heavy manufacturing environment. This role routinely utilizes the operation of material handling equipment and various tools and machinery. 

Physical Demands

• The employee may be required to stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to the floor.
• Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or exert up to 25 pounds of force frequently.
• Visual acuity – Normal requirements for reading written instructions and computer screens.
• Hearing ability – Normal requirements for understanding verbal instructions.
• Working conditions – The employee is subject to a normal office environment with significant exposure to high noise levels and/or physical hazards when visiting manufacturing floor daily.
• Capable of wearing appropriate related PPE for extended periods of time.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, or a related field preferred. Equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience may be considered.
• Minimum of 3 years of EHS experience, preferably within a manufacturing, industrial, fabrication, or heavy equipment environment.
• Working knowledge of applicable OSHA, Cal/OSHA, EPA, and other federal, state, and local EHS regulations and industry best practices.
• Experience supporting or conducting workplace safety inspections, compliance audits, incident investigations, and corrective action activities.
• Experience with EHS management systems, hazard identification, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), risk assessments, and hierarchy of controls principles.
• Ability to interpret EHS regulatory requirements and effectively communicate requirements and recommended actions to employees, supervisors, and management.
• Experience supporting environmental, occupational health, and industrial hygiene programs preferred.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and experience using EHS data management, incident tracking, or compliance systems.

Professional Certifications Preferred

Relevant EHS certifications and training are preferred and may include:

• Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
• Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST)
• Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP)
• OSHA 30-Hour General Industry
• HAZWOPER 24-Hour or 40-Hour Certification, as applicable
• First Aid/CPR/AED Certification
• Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification is a plus but not required.
